What is a taxi dancer?
A taxi dancer was a professional dance partner, usually a woman, who worked in dance halls during the early to mid-20th century. Patrons, typically men, would buy tickets (often called "dance tickets")—usually costing 10 cents each—and redeem them for a dance with a taxi dancer. Each ticket was good for one dance.
The term "taxi dancer" is similar to a taxicab: just as you pay for time in a cab, you paid for time dancing with these partners.
